Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese braiding techique using multiple cords, often silk, and traditionally done on a marudai. Many of these braids can be made using an inexpensive foam disk, cords of varying fibers and thickness, and a variety of beads. Participants in this beginning class will learn the kongo gumi round braid to make a bracelet using 8-1mm satin nylon cords of one or more colors. This is a complicated looking, but rather simple braid and will provide the skills necessary to take the next step of adding beads in the next class, Intermediate Kumihimo: Braiding with Beads.
This class (or similar experience) is a prerequisite for the Intermediate Kumihimo: Braiding with Beads class.
Participants will receive a kit containing:
Foam kumihimo disk (6” standard thickness), 8 bobbins, Alligator clip, Plastic bag with weight, Enough 1mm satin nylon cord in one color to complete a bracelet (Instructor will offer kits with different colors and participants can trade with each other to make a multicolor bracelet), Glue-on clasp (magnetic or toggle), Glue and/or 2-part epoxy will be available for use.
