Come explore the art of monotype with the unique medium of encaustic. In this class students will create five (5) monoprints using griddles, hot wax, and a variety of mark-making tools. We will then take these prints to the next level by adding beads and wire. By the end of the workshop, students will be confident in their ability to manipulate the wax and mixed media into stunning monoprints. This encaustic phototransfer workshop is for artists of all levels. Join us for an experiment with hot wax and to master a unique printmaking technique!

Please note, hot wax can aggravate those with sensitive lungs. A fan will be going in the background to promote ventilation, and masks will be offered to attendees. This class is not recommended for children under 13 years of age.

Come to The Groove and learn how to create a beautiful landscapecollage!
In this class you will learn how to glue layers of translucent tissue paper on to a 12x 12 board and create a glowing landscape. You will learn about color combinations and spectral light, to create a landscape with light, depth, and glowing color. Supplies provided. 5 hour class, with lunch break.

Convert a recycled bicycle wheel into a gorgeous, colorful stained glass spinner for your yard. You will cut stained glass scrap, learn to foil and solder. All materials provided.

Make a few pairs of earrings and a couple of stunning glass pendants for yourself or gifts! Kid appropriate, all materials provided.

Let’s create a beautiful fall landscape together, using watercolor! In this class students will create at least one fall inspired landscape painting. We will explore different techniques for creating cloud-filled skies and foliage-covered cottonwoods. By the end of the workshop, students will be confident in their ability to paint fall landscapes using watercolor. This watercolor workshop is for artists who are interested in building their landscape-painting skills. Join us for a relaxing day of fall watercolor landscapes!

Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese braiding techique using multiple cords, often silk, and traditionally done on a marudai. Many of these braids can be made using an inexpensive foam disk, cords of varying fibers and thickness, and a variety of beads. Participants in this beginning class will learn the kongo gumi round braid to make a bracelet using 8-1mm satin nylon cords of one or more colors. This is a complicated looking, but rather simple braid and will provide the skills necessary to take the next step of adding beads in the next class, Intermediate Kumihimo: Braiding with Beads.

This class (or similar experience) is a prerequisite for the Intermediate Kumihimo: Braiding with Beads class.

Participants will receive a kit containing:

Foam kumihimo disk (6” standard thickness), 8 bobbins, Alligator clip, Plastic bag with weight, Enough 1mm satin nylon cord in one color to complete a bracelet (Instructor will offer kits with different colors and participants can trade with each other to make a multicolor bracelet), Glue-on clasp (magnetic or toggle), Glue and/or 2-part epoxy will be available for use.

This guaranteed-to-succeed method is fast, fun and fabulous! Bring in a color picture of your favorite creature (8x10) and we’ll convert it into a colorful portrait you’ll be proud of!

What is a fossil? It's an impression of something that no longer exists. Fossil Vitra records leaves and flowers in glass. The carbon burns off leaving only the impression, permanently recorded in glass.

Back by popular demand! Learn to cast glass into solid shapes. You'll fill holiday-themed casting molds with sheet glass, crushed glass, frits, noodles, and stringers. You'll learn to layer the colors with clear and dichroic glasses to get brilliant combinations. These castings can be hung on a provided hook, used as paper weights, or just displayed.

This workshop is an invitation to pause and honor our grief. Artist and therapist, Tina Wolverton will lead a workshop on creating grief bowls. The bowl is traditionally a vessel of nourishment yet it is also a symbol of emptiness. What are you carrying ? What is in your bowl? We will explore how to honor our

grief through art, writing and being in safe community together. This workshop is appropriate for adults working through both individual and collective grief. Participants are asked to bring a small bowl that will be used as a mold as well as any personal mementos, collage materials, papers or thin fabric.

We will make blocks and print up to 50 holiday cards with your own designs. Bring some simple ideas to start and feel free to use some of the blocks that have already been created - collaboration encouraged. All skill levels welcome and all materials provided. Ages 10+

Make a one-of-a-kind holiday card for that special person in your life. We will use tile, beads and glass to create a mini work of art inside a lidded tin box. A personalized message is added to finish card. Each participant will make 2-3 cards.

Use our wonderful collection of colorful glass scrap to fuse a “scrappy mirror" that is perfect for holiday gifting. Session 1 is creating the fused pieces, session 2 is cutting and gluing the mirrors and hardware. You will make 3 smallish mirrors.

Hang them on your holiday tree or in a window. You can hang them around your neck as a pendant. Fused glass poinsettias make great holiday gifts.

• In this class, we'll cut glass and compose the ornaments. They get fused in the kiln to create two dazzling pieces which you'll retrieve in 48 hours.

How do we decide where the energy, weight, or balance of an artwork will be when the composition isn’t based on anything in our objective reality? How do we express meaning, emotion, and story with just line, shape, and space?

Kelley Knickerbocker walks us through her unique approach to abstract design for mosaic, and show us how vital good design and composition are for our artworks’ success.

Not only does Kelley answer those - and more - questions with her usual humor and thoroughness, but she defines terms and gives practical examples and exercises for creating simple frameworks of line and shape that can then be brought to rich, complex life by the lush texture, value and rhythm of our mosaic lines.

Keeping the basic principles of art and design close at hand (Kelley shares her favorite design book), as well as the many functions of line and shape in design (handy templates abound), Kelley shows us how to find relationships and stories in basic lines and shapes and how they’re occupying the space they’re in. For example, as soon as you bisect an open space with a line you have created two spaces with a relationship to one another. Will that relationship be tense? Peaceful? Balanced? Competitive? These are the choices you’ll learn to make and exploit in order to most effectively begin conveying an idea or mood.
