Create a mini flower or leaf painting using molten crayons! This modern twist on encaustic art invites students to use the Encaustic Stylus Pro and crayons to paint a mini work of art. Images will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own photos. This class is for students of all levels – if you are looking to explore a new medium or perfect your encaustic practice, join us!

Please note, hot wax can aggravate those with sensitive lungs. A fan will be going in the background to promote ventilation, and masks will be offered to attendees.

Through our* workshops we invite artists the world over to participate in They Had No

Time to Say Goodbye, a multimedia collaborative installation about missing and

murdered Indigenous women in North America. The workshops are designed to educate

participants about the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls

(#MMIWG).

During the workshops participants view a video (link below) followed by a discussion.

They then draw portraits of North American Indigenous women on 9” x 8” tracing paper

to incorporate into the installation. These images represent the countless Indigenous

women who disappear without a trace.

Next, participants tape their drawings onto a window, or light box, tape an x-ray over it,

and etch their portrait onto the x-ray. This will be added to the installation after it has

been embellished with red paint (red being the color signifying the MMIW movement).

Those who choose not to etch portraits on x-rays are invited to donate their drawings of

Indigenous women to the project.

* “Our” refers to our collective of artists/activists: Kimberly Wahpepah (Diné), a survivor

of sex trafficking, now an advocate for survivors; Sandi Ludescher who is painting

portraits of actual missing and murdered Indigenous women to be included in our

installation; Linda Piper, Black activist, writer, theater director and storyteller. I am the

Doug Ostroff will introduce you to his mobile glass studio and will demonstrate the basic process of glass blowing and sculpting of this wonderful material that will be around 2100 F degrees. Glass has been decorated since it was first formed.  An ABQ resident in the Northeast Heights has collected over 2000 pieces of art glass from the Victorian era to today in preparation for an upcoming book, "Glass Decorative Techniques: A Historical Perspective."  The tour will focus on how artists have decorated glass through different time periods and how the use of glass techniques changed because of new discoveries and societal expectations.

Working Dichroic Glass

Enjoy a guided discussion on how to cold work dichroic glass into objects of beauty.  Whether dichroic cubes or sheet glass, this material can be worked into almost any shape by an imaginative artist with the right tools.  This presentation covers the tools and planning a project to include selecting the right type of glass.  It also covers the cutting, grinding, polishing and gluing of the glass pieces to create that work of art.  It doesn't matter if you are a newbie or experienced glass artist, you will discover tips, tricks, and techniques to expand your capabilities.

Tim Carey is a talented, yet unknown Los Angeles-based artist. He is also a bit of a jackass, who uses wit and humor to charm you into forgiving his flaws. As a Hail Mary, Tim and the company he works for, Judson Studios, bluff their way into winning the commission to make the world’s largest stained-glass window of its kind, beating out 60 companies from around the globe. The problem is, Tim has no idea how to make his wild and complicated design.

After a desperate search, Tim comes to learn about someone who might have the answer… a world-famous, Italian glass maestro named Narcissus Quagliata, who has a special way of making glass do things Tim didn’t know were possible. From the moment Narcissus arrives, Tim quickly learns that his personal talent and humor can only take him so far. If he has any chance of making it to the end of the project and potentially achieve greatness, he must confront his laziness, passive artistic aspirations, limited business instincts and spiritual insecurities. He must drop his ego and submit to the life and artistic lessons of a complicated master, who has long preceded him in greatness.

As this documentary unfolds, the clash of two big personalities slowly transforms into the forging of a lasting friendship. Learn how glass artists pull murrini and cane for use in glass projects, including mosaic and fusing.

Learn the historical art of creating intricate jewelry using tiny tesserae of multiple kinds.  This hands-on course will teach you how to cut materials, use them effectively in a design, and set them into metal bezels. You will leave with two finished, wearable artpieces of your own design.

Class topics:

* The history of the micro mosaic

* How to design a graphic micro mosaic using paper and colored pencils.  

* How to cut micro mosaic materials: smalti, filati, millefiori, beads, and mini tiles.  

* How to use specialized adhesives to attractively set your tesserae

Come explore the art of monotype with the unique medium of encaustic. In this class students will create five (5) monoprints using griddles, hot wax, and a variety of mark-making tools. We will then take these prints to the next level by adding beads and wire. By the end of the workshop, students will be confident in their ability to manipulate the wax and mixed media into stunning monoprints. You will make up to 4 gorgeous fused glass coasters (to keep, or they make wonderful gifts!) that will be full-fused in the kiln and available in 2-3 days. So many wonderful color and material options - appropriate for all ages!

Join us for a class on making scrappy bowls.   You won't need to cut glass for this project!  Your bowl will be made using mostly clear scrap glass with color scrap accents.  

Back by popular demand! Learn to cast glass into solid shapes. You'll fill holiday-themed casting molds with sheet glass, crushed glass, frits, noodles, and stringers. You'll learn to layer the colors with clear and dichroic glasses to get brilliant combinations. These castings can be hung on a provided hook, used as paper weights, or just displayed.

This workshop is an invitation to pause and honor our grief. Artist and therapist, Tina Wolverton will lead a workshop on creating grief bowls. The bowl is traditionally a vessel of nourishment yet it is also a symbol of emptiness. What are you carrying ? What is in your bowl? We will explore how to honor our

grief through art, writing and being in safe community together. This workshop is appropriate for adults working through both individual and collective grief. Participants are asked to bring a small bowl that will be used as a mold as well as any personal mementos, collage materials, papers or thin fabric.

We will make blocks and print up to 50 holiday cards with your own designs. Bring some simple ideas to start and feel free to use some of the blocks that have already been created - collaboration encouraged. All skill levels welcome and all materials provided. Ages 10+

Make a one-of-a-kind holiday card for that special person in your life. We will use tile, beads and glass to create a mini work of art inside a lidded tin box. A personalized message is added to finish card. Each participant will make 2-3 cards.

Hang them on your holiday tree or in a window. You can hang them around your neck as a pendant. Fused glass poinsettias make great holiday gifts.

• In this class, we'll cut glass and compose the ornaments. They get fused in the kiln to create two dazzling pieces which you'll retrieve in 48 hours.

• All tools, materials, and heat (one kiln-firing) provided.

How do we decide where the energy, weight, or balance of an artwork will be when the composition isn’t based on anything in our objective reality? How do we express meaning, emotion, and story with just line, shape, and space?

Kelley Knickerbocker walks us through her unique approach to abstract design for mosaic, and show us how vital good design and composition are for our artworks’ success.

Not only does Kelley answer those - and more - questions with her usual humor and thoroughness, but she defines terms and gives practical examples and exercises for creating simple frameworks of line and shape that can then be brought to rich, complex life by the lush texture, value and rhythm of our mosaic lines.

Keeping the basic principles of art and design close at hand (Kelley shares her favorite design book), as well as the many functions of line and shape in design (handy templates abound), Kelley shows us how to find relationships and stories in basic lines and shapes and how they’re occupying the space they’re in. For example, as soon as you bisect an open space with a line you have created two spaces with a relationship to one another. Will that relationship be tense? Peaceful? Balanced? Competitive? These are the choices you’ll learn to make and exploit in order to most effectively begin conveying an idea or mood.

You will make 2 small dish (5 or 6 inches) or one 10-inch bowl.

Piece will be slumped for you

Bring your own project and supplies (or buy them at The Groove’s mosaic supply shop!) and work on your piece together with others. Use our tools and grinders as needed. Let’s make art in community!!
